Leopard seals are top predators in the Antarctic, taking practically any prey from krill and squid, to fish, penguins and other seals. The head is huge with large canine and postcanine teeth, and a huge gape giving the appearance of a permanent grin. The sinuous body is long and slender, silver to dark grey, darker dorsally with various spots from which comes the leopard name. They are common around Antarctica, lounging on the ice but range as far north as the Falkland Islands.
